Patty Murray Kills Bipartisan Measures To Protect America’s Southern Border

WASHINGTON – As our nation’s border states suffer from mounting cross-border violence, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) voted today to kill two bipartisan measures that would protect the United States’ border with Mexico. The amendments to protect our country’s porous southern border were supported by at least 12 of Murray’s fellow Democrats.

As the Associated Press reports:
President Barack Obama's Democratic allies in the Senate on Thursday killed a move by presidential rival John McCain to send an additional 6,000 troops to the U.S-Mexico border. The Arizona Republican says the security situation along the border has deteriorated so badly that 3,000 troops are needed just to help protect his state. Even though McCain won support from a dozen Democrats, he failed to muster the 60-vote supermajority required to adopt his plan under the rules of the 100-member Senate. Democrats also repelled more than $2 billion in additional border security spending proposed by border state Republicans John Cornyn of Texas and Jon Kyl of Arizona.

“By killing these bipartisan proposals to protect America’s vulnerable border with Mexico, Patty Murray once again put her narrow D.C. political interests ahead of the safety and well-being of voters in Washington State and across America. There’s no doubt that voters will hold Murray accountable for her misplaced priorities and partisan agenda when they cast their ballots this November,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokeswoman Amber Marchand.

NRSC’s Statement On Washington State U.S. Senate Race

WASHINGTON – National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Press Secretary Amber Marchand released the following statement in response to recent developments in the Washington Senate race today:

“Yet another qualified Republican candidate stepped forward today to challenge Senator Patty Murray this November. No matter who the voters ultimately select as their Republican nominee in August, we are confident that Washingtonians will hold Patty Murray accountable for her long record fighting for higher taxes and out-of-control spending during her 18 years in D.C. Unfortunately, this former mom in tennis shoes has simply lost touch with her constituents during her nearly two decades in the Senate.

“As a member of the Democrat leadership, Murray championed the President’s unpopular health spending bill, which will increase taxes and raise costs for middle class Washingtonians. And while she claimed the massive stimulus debacle would ‘create jobs and get our country back on track,’ Washingtonians continue to suffer from high unemployment and more lost jobs. Over the last year, Murray has also voted to raise the national debt ceiling to an alarming $14.3 trillion.

“Yet, instead of running on her record, Murray and her handlers in D.C. launched a dirty smear campaign against Dino Rossi before he even entered the race, engaging in tasteless behavior that even her fellow Democrats have called ‘heavy-handed’ and ‘juvenile.’

“Families, seniors, and job-creators in the Evergreen State deserve an independent-minded leader who will represent their values and fight for their best interests – not another rubberstamp for President Obama and the Democrat party leaders in D.C. That’s why we are confident that voters will hold Patty Murray accountable for her out-of-step voting record and elect a Republican as their next U.S. Senator this November.”

Heck's Democrats Fail to Lead, Punt on the Budget Democrats Still Refuse to Govern as National Debt Hits Alarming New Benchmark Washington-

As Democrats continue to push forward with their runaway spending agenda, Americans have been delivered another alarming reminder that the majority is refusing to do the job of governing. Just yesterday, the U.S. Debt Clock hit $13 trillion, and experts admit that the country’s red ink has officially become a drag on economic growth. That’s an ominous warning that it’s time for Washington to finally reign in spending and start trimming the country’s budget – that is, if they could come up with one.

“The U.S. national debt hit $13 trillion today, a stratospheric number with looming implications for every citizen. (“National Debt Clock — Tracking the Red,” Fox News, 5/26/2010) “The gross U.S. debt is approaching a level equivalent to 90 percent of the country's gross domestic product, the level at which growth has historically declined, said Carmen Reinhart, a University of Maryland economist.”

When gross debt hits 90 percent of GDP, Reinhart told the commission during a hearing in the Capitol, growth ‘deteriorates markedly.’” (Walter Alarkon, U.S. Debt Reaches Level at Which Economic Growth Begins to Slow,” The Hill, 5/26/10)

While the country sinks deeper and deeper into the red, Democrats refuse to introduce any sort of plan to control spending and put the economy back on track. Instead, in the words of their own party leaders, they’re failing at one of their most fundamental duties.

“Many Democrats relished in criticizing Republicans for failing to pass a final budget resolution in 2006, when the GOP controlled both chambers.

“Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), then the House minority whip, said Republicans who failed to enact a final budget measure weren’t meeting ‘the most basic responsibility of governing.’

“Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt (D-S.C.) blasted Republicans that year, telling them, ‘If you can’t budget, you can’t govern.’” (Walter Alarkon, “GOP Plays Back Dem Trash Talk on Budget,” The Hill, 5/27/10)

“In the face of a looming fiscal crisis that demands action, Denny Heck's friends in Washington just can’t be bothered to put forward any sort of plan to get spending under control,” said NRCC Communications Director Ken Spain. “Even in the words of Heck's own party leaders, the Democrat majority is failing to do the job of governing. It’s time for Heck's Democrats to start following the lead of middle-class families who are tightening their own belts, but they simply refuse.”

Though U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) has attempted to score populist points by calling Wall Street bankers “the heart of our economic crisis,”records reveal that Murray has taken over $500,000 in campaign cash from the securities and investment industry, including $28,000 from scandal-plagued Goldman Sachs.

Murray’s Democrat colleague, U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), facing harsh bipartisan criticism for her own hypocrisy, announced today that she will “donate all of [her] contributions from Goldman Sachs this cycle to charity.”

The announcement underscores the fact that when it comes to Wall Street, Murray’s words don’t match her deeds. With public polls showing her vulnerable in this November’s election, Murray has hypocritically clung to her own Goldman Sachs campaign cash, even as she continues to slam the securities and investment industry.

“If Senator Murray truly believes her own rhetoric, why is she holding onto hundreds of thousands of dollars from Wall Street bankers, including approximately $28,000 in Goldman cash?” asked National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) spokeswoman Amber Marchand. “As Murray plays a populist for the cameras but acts like a practiced politician behind closed doors, Washingtonians can see through her hypocrisy, and they will hold her accountable this November.”

Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) Said “Wall Street Greed” Was “At The Heart Of Our Economic Crisis.” “MURRAY: ‘This committee will come to order. This morning, this subcommittee will hold its first hearing of the 111th Congress, and I can’t think of a more timely subject for us to examine than the current economic crises and its impact on homeowners across the country. There is no question that a perfect storm of Wall Street greed, irresponsible mortgage lending, and uninformed decisions by borrowers are at the heart of our economic crisis.’ (Senate Committee On Appropriations, Subcommittee On Transportation, Housing And Urban Development, And Related Agencies Holds A Hearing On The Role Of The Federal Housing Administration In Addressing The Housing Crisis, 4/3/09)

Gov. Gregoire Sheds More Campaign Promises

Signed Tax Hikes Today & Will Sign

Initiative To Create Even More Taxes

BELLEVUE -  Washington State Republican Party Chairman Luke Esser released the following statement today in response to Gov. Gregoire's signing of a package of tax hikes today and her statement that she would sign Initiative 1077, which would impose a new state income tax:

"After twice telling voters while campaigning for governor that she had no intention of raising taxes, Gov. Gregoire once again signed into law even more job-killing taxes today. A state reeling from high unemployment and a lingering recession must now endure more than $800 million in new tax increases by the Democrats. I am proud to say that not one Republican member of the State Legislature voted for any of these tax increases, for which Democrats bear the entire responsibility. The voters need to be fully aware that it is Gov. Gregoire and the Democrats who are raising their taxes in the middle of a recession, not the Republicans."

“Before the ink was dry on her signature raising taxes today, Gregoire indicated that she will sign Initiative 1077, which would impose a new income tax in the state. Of course Gregoire sang a different tune when she was running for re-election in 2008. While masquerading as a fiscal conservative, Gregoire stared into the camera and said the following in one her ads: ‘I do not support a state income tax and never have.’ Gregoire slightly backtracked later, indicating that she just wanted to ‘have a good discussion’ and a ‘debate’ about I-1077’s income tax. Taxpayers should note that Gov. Gregoire never wants to ‘have a good discussion’ and a ‘debate’ over lowering taxes or keeping them constant, but is always open to discussing tax increases.”
