WSRP Chairman Susan Hutchison sent out the following message on Friday May 26:
As we enjoy our Memorial Day weekend plans with friends and family, let’s remember to take a moment on Monday to acknowledge the great sacrifices that have been made to guarantee our freedom.
Our first Republican President established Memorial Day to honor the many who died to save the Union. Abraham Lincoln’s words in the Gettysburg Address are as true now as they were then:
“…that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
Even now, our divided country unites in honor of the brave men and women who have given their lives in service to the United States of America. I hope you will share Lincoln’s words with your family as you observe Memorial Day 2017.
