Democrat Emergency Powers ‘Reform’

BELLEVUE — The Washington State Republican Party (WSRP) Chairman Caleb Heimlich issued the following statement on the Democrat Emergency Powers legislation (SB 5909) that recently passed the Washington State Senate.

“The people of our state have made their voices heard – they want Emergency Powers reform. Democrats in Olympia have passed a bill through the Senate whose title does not match the substance of the bill. This is a clear political move to save themselves from the voters in the upcoming election.”

Chairman Heimlich continued, “SB 5909 does not provide any meaningful change. Governor Inslee can still make overreaching decisions that will last for at least 90 days before our legislative leaders can provide oversight and even then, nothing will change as Democrat leaders have continually refused to reign in Governor Inslee’s executive overreach. This legislation would require all four legislative caucus leaders to agree to terminate the state of emergency. In short, this bill does nothing but appease voters who aren’t intimately involved in state politics. This is clearly an electioneering attempt by Democrats to secure more seats in November.”
