BELLEVUE – The Washington State Republican Party is calling for an immediate investigation following news of possible illegal electioneering activity posted by a Democratic candidate in the 42nd Legislative District.

Chairman Heimlich said, “After becoming aware of the possible taxpayer-funded voter manipulation by United States Postal Service (USPS) workers, we are calling for an immediate investigation by the USPS Inspector General, as well as the Washington State Attorney General.”

“The most urgent responsibility by our elected leaders is that they uphold free and fair elections, and anything less is unacceptable to the people of our great state. We must get to the bottom of this incident and identify and prosecute any criminal behavior so the people of Washington State remain confident in the fairness of our election system.”

I’m a letter carrier in Tacoma. To be honest this just may be a case of the letter carrier folding the political flyer around the ballot so that it would fit in the mailbox. My route requires that I walk up to each address. With a variety mail box sizes and sizes of mail pieces to deliver often I’ll make a folder out one piece and place the other pieces inside then place in mail box. Heard reports that others in the area also had the political ad wrapped around the ballot. Making folders (or wrapping) of one piece of mail around others is a common practice of letter carriers. Most of the mail arrives at the delivery stations presorted (by machines) in trays. The sorting machines would not have been able to process the ballots as shown in the photo.

It’s good that an investigation may be started, but don’t expect much in the way of satisfaction. It is Washington State after all.
